Kids Nowadays and the PBBY-Salanga Prize 2010

October 30, 2009

For the past months, I often have conversations on Facebook with my 5-year-old cousin and she amazes me that she is  already very familiar with it.  Children nowadays make up a portion of  the said social network. What they enjoy on this site are farm ville, pet society, yo-ville and other games they can play, as well as the chat. One time I asked her to read a book instead of “facebook-ing”. But she  answered, “Alam ko ng magbasa!” (I already now how to read!). School libraries and educational practitioners should engage children more to reading books and to other more productive educational activities like storytelling. And storytellings, book talks, etc. start with writing stories, poems and other kinds of literature.

Once again, the Philippines Board on Books for Young People  (PBBY) is now accepting entries for the 2010 PBBY Salanga Prize. Deadline of submission of entries is on November 26, 2009. For more information, please visit http://adarnahouse.wordpress.com/2010-pbby-salanga-prize.
