Sweet Stupidity
June 21, 2010I left my key inside and I had to wait outside for more or less two hours. Call me stupid. This unfortunate night, however, gave me an opportunity to be with my own mind and soul. Waiting without any book is boooring. And I got to be able to read my building-mate’s readings in her law subject piled up in the lobby– that evidence is a medium of proof and proof is the result of evidence. After this page, I gave up reading. At some time in my life, I thought of taking up law. But I only have the ability to understand, and rephrasing my thoughts is not my talent. Law course is for people who are creative in formulating colorful reasons and dramatically relating evidences and proofs to facts and/or supposed-to-be facts.
I noticed a glittery effect on my skin. It’s cool that I even thought of wearing it with an evening gown will make you really shine in a romantic moonlight party. It may work in parties like this but never dare try it. This glittery effect are debris of sweat. Taste it and you’ll know. This glitters also appear on skin and scalp is the skin on our head and you might want to wonder how salty your head is at the end of the day.
I thought of logging in socnets (social networks) in an internet shop at the building I’m living in to share my misfortune. Logging in would not give me the keys. So I went back to the sauna-ish lobby as if waiting would grant me the keys. I thought of buying ice cream. Ice creams are rewards given to kids to stop them from crying. But this time, ice cream is a comfort for stupidity, a reward for something brilliant that no one will not do for the rest of his/her life.
Roommates (Mayie andh Jhennie) finally arrived. And they have french fries for me for a very thoughtful and sweet of mine to wait for them before I enter our room. -_-
I’m done with removing the “glitters” on my skin. Time to move on. Back to reading Fulghum.

LLE 2009
November 12, 2009The Librarian Licensure Exam is not as easy as you think. I tell you. Now for sure, after taking the boards, the profession of librarianship won’t be taken for granted by any librarian who took it and passed; and who took it and failed.
It was…
But there were many…
And I hope the next LLE would be…
I hope it will not…
I pray….

Kids Nowadays and the PBBY-Salanga Prize 2010
October 30, 2009
For the past months, I often have conversations on Facebook with my 5-year-old cousin and she amazes me that she is already very familiar with it. Children nowadays make up a portion of the said social network. What they enjoy on this site are farm ville, pet society, yo-ville and other games they can play, as well as the chat. One time I asked her to read a book instead of “facebook-ing”. But she answered, “Alam ko ng magbasa!” (I already now how to read!). School libraries and educational practitioners should engage children more to reading books and to other more productive educational activities like storytelling. And storytellings, book talks, etc. start with writing stories, poems and other kinds of literature. Once again, the Philippines Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) is now accepting entries for the 2010 PBBY Salanga Prize. Deadline of submission of entries is on November 26, 2009. For more information, please visit http://adarnahouse.wordpress.com/2010-pbby-salanga-prize.
A Little Insight About LIS
September 8, 2009First and foremost, library and information science (LIS) students do not memorize the location of the books and other materials in libraries; nor LIS professionals spend all the rest of their lives locating the books needed by the users. They are not your ordinary librarians who you stereotype as strict, snobbish old maids who restrict the use of books. Just as the era becomes more and more modern and the world is bombarded with information, the roles of librarians change so as to adapt with the changing needs of the humankind for the development of all areas of life. Accordingly, job titles of librarians vary depending on the roles they have in an institution. Librarians are also known as information specialists, information professionals, database administrator, multimedia facilitator, subject specialists and educational counselor (for academic libraries). Librarians promote reading and studying by promoting the use of libraries.
Librarians may acquire the power of recollecting the exact locations of library materials. Moreover, one unseen thing by most random people is the fact that librarians develop and follow standards (international or specialized) on how books, serials, multimedia and AV materials are catalogued. International standards used in cataloguing are Library of Congress Classification, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR), Dewey Decimal Classification, Sear’s List, and Cutter numbers.
The School of Library and Information Science in the University of the Philippines Diliman is the first university that offered library science as a course in 1966. In 2002, the curriculum of the BLIS course was revised and four tracks in the course were included. These are health, law, Information technology, and archives and records management (ARM). Subjects in the ARM track concentrate on the management of records and preservation of records with enduring archival values. In the health track, students are familiarized with medical terms in medical and health libraries. In the law track, LIS students concentrate on legal practices that protect librarians and users of law libraries. IT track, on the other hand, concentrates on the development of databases and other programming subjects necessary on the automation of libraries.
The R. A. 9246 or the act modernizing the practice of librarianship in the Philippines, is the sole existing law in the country regarding the practice of librarianship, including the legal practices and scope of librarianship, creation of Philippine Regulatory Board for librarians, and the licensure examinations and registration.#
Librarian Licensure Exams 2009 Update
July 12, 2009Graduates of any course concentrating on library science (other than BLIS and MLIS) can no longer take the Librarian Licensure Examinations for November 2009. The request for “extending the period within which to allow graduates of the above mentioned degrees to take the examination” by the Philippine Board for Librarians has been denied. The five-year time frame that has been alloted for the aforementioned graduates to take the licensure exams upon the effectivity of RA 9246 has been expired. Any extention can only be done through amendment of the law and any amendment can only be done by the body that created the law.
Therefore, anyone who wants to be a licensed librarian can only take the licensure exam if s/he is a BLIS or MLIS graduate.
[edit] Also, retakers of the board exam are given last chance to take this exam on November.
In regard with this, the Librarian Licensure Examinations will be on November 10 - 11, 2009. Deadline of filing for the application for the Librarian Licensure Examinations will be on October 21.
The UP School of LIbrary and Information Studies Review Program starts on August 9 - October 25 (every Sunday) and October 18 -25(Intensive). For reservations and other info, please go to the UP SLIS Official website.
